In the early '90s, comic books could easily have been called "gimmick books" due to a slew of thin story lines with hologram covers and the fake death of one of the greatest superheroes ever. Fans spoke out with a furious anger and began to turn away from their beloved comics. The industry was down for the count.

Then in 1992, artist/writer Todd McFarlane stepped up with the smelling salts. He breathed new life into comics by innovating Spiderman's look and creating the "Spawn" comic series. When Image Comics was just one year old, they published "Spawn" and McFarlane quickly joined the ranks of comic superstars. But being one of the top dogs in comics wasn't enough for him. He later branched out and started his own toy company, McFarlane Toys.

In 1994 he started producing highly detailed action figures for his Spawn series, and today McFarlane Toys has dozens of toy lines based on "The Simpsons," sports, music, and a series called "Movie Maniacs."

Most of McFarlane's toy lines are designs based on characters from shows or movies with a bizarre or mysterious nature, so it seems fitting that he created action figures for ABC's island thriller "Lost."

The show is now in its third season and its premise so far is frankly complicated and somewhat confusing. The show begins when Oceanic Flight 815, flying from Australia to California, crashes on an island in the middle of nowhere. The survivors find that something on the island can perform miracles like healing cripples and making people hallucinate without the use of drugs. The show also seems to revolve around a magical set of winning lotto numbers that might predict the end of the world.

"Lost" has viewers glued to their TV sets weekly in order to find answers to the island's mysteries, so hopefully when ABC starts airing new episodes in February the public will find what they're looking for.

Series One of McFarlane's "Lost" action figures hit shelves in November of 2006. It consists of six of the main characters in major moments from Season One. To celebrate the release of the toys, McFarlane joined "Lost" star Jorge Garcia and Executive Producer Bryan Burk at Toys R Us in Times Square for a special signing event. The first 200 guests who purchased "The Hatch Boxed Set" at the center of the toy universe got to meet the dynamic trio and got their toys signed.

TimesSquare.com was there to cover the event and we asked McFarlane if he could give us some secrets of the show--like what exactly is it with the polar bears and smoke monsters on the island.

Of course he said he was just as lost as we were.
