Scary, but still not a furry.
It isn't that I haven't been to cons before; I've been to a grand total of one, and that one was in a small upper class town on Long Island with lots of anime fans and some furries. This, to me, is enough to instill a reasonable amount of fear in anyone. Now, despite the fact that this year's New York Comic Con hosted the first annual American Anime Awards (yes, I was there and I still don't get it), there were surprisingly few of the former and disappointingly none of the latter. That's right--a con with no furries.

It's hard to say what draws someone to go to a comic con. The New York Comic Con comes rather early on in the year and is probably the largest of its kind that happens in the winter or spring, leading eventually to that zenith of cons in San Diego, Comic Con International: San Diego.

The New York Comic Con is only in its second year of existence, so its size and ambitions have been fairly modest by comparison, but at its rate of growth from the first year to the second, it may well someday catch up to its West Coast cousin.

Given the growing ambitions of the Con, this year's festivities drew a great number of traders, press people and civilians. The people that are actually willing to pay for all three days to get in--the hardcore fans, the "geeks" as it were--are usually the most interesting people one finds there. For a reasonably huge con there was a surprisingly low proportion of huge guys in Tron suits--but there were a fair number of interesting exhibitioners on the trade floor.

The New York Comic Con draws hundreds of artists and businesses from all over the world, and the trade floor at the Javits Center features several easily findable huge booths and displays from showcases such giants as Marvel and Playstation.  But to find the nitty gritty, the true soul of that which is... Con, one must look into the more unique products available on the trade floor.

This is a look into the strange and wonderous offerings one might find at large Cons that are not so easy to find.  From head-scanning technology to turn you into  your own action figure, to action figures modeled on defication, this year's Con truly had much to offer in that regard.  Take a look at everything you never even knew you wanted.
