In this video interview, director Barbara Kopple ("Havoc") discusses her new film about the controversy surrounding top-selling country act The Dixie Chicks. "Shut Up & Sing" chronicles the backlash generated by singer Natalie Maines' anti-Bush comment on a London stage in 2003, which triggered a surge of resentment among the country music establishment.

Though receiving death threats from demented fans and boycotts from radio stations, the story of The Dixie Chicks is one of perseverance, of a group who knew that they were right and refused to back down on their stance. Instead they continued to make music and raise families, and in the meantime saw their formerly controversial opinions become accepted in the mainstream. Kopple's opinion is that the controvery was actually good for The Dixie Chicks' career, that dealing with those issues forced them to dig deeper into their well of creativity and write more meaningful songs.
