Sometime in September I was invited to watch a performance. Suzana emerged on stage. Her observable grace is that of a ballerina. Her body is of a gymnast. Her range is clearly of an actor but her intensity, well it was something else entirely. It intrigued me. I wanted to know more and so a few weeks later we met for a cup of tea.

Unlike most kids she used that time to sharpen the emerging persona she now possesses. She pondered the meaning of life and who she was, "I have always been able to be different and not struggle with it. It helped me in life, to find my voice as an artist. As an only kid, it made me defend my decisions." She was a bookworm preferring poetry over other reading and played teacher with friends, instructing and mentoring them while envisioning what she wanted to accomplish. Her leadership qualities solidified at an early age. While speaking with Suzana, the obvious conviction in everything she says illustrates that she is well aware of herself. The opinions she voices are her own. This is significant of her strong character and willpower considering that her adolescence was spent in the ballet world were criticism is harsh and frequent. The ballet world opened up for Suzana through gymnastics. Being naturally flexible, she easily found expression through movement. At eight years old she decided to start gymnastics after watching it and mimicking it from TV. "It made me harness my energies towards a specific goal, it was tangible" she recalled. Eleven year old Suzana switched gears. "Destiny led me to ballet...It showed me my vulnerability and my humanity. It showed me my reserves of strength, it made me identify with people." Yet ballet, much like everything in life has a darker side. Suzana had to adjust to debilitating critique and scrutiny. After a while she realized that she was no longer happy with ballet, she decided to embark on a path to creating something of her own. Suzana believes in energy, divine or not. "I am searching to be closer to it. I search for it in music, silence and so on. When I perform I'm in tune - communion with it. I have felt it through childhood...I am not a follower. If I accept to be somewhere I will do it because I put myself there and I feel that I want to do the piece...but mostly my nature is more of an innovator. I am the teacher in the classroom. I don't struggle with my ideas, I have a vision and I am driven. I must birth it. I was always choreographing dances here and there, in my late teens. That's when I started, I guess officially. It was effortless, total flow". Suzana is an artist. She is a creator. Wether she uses dance or acting, if she's directing or producing, modeling or writing, it starts with a clear vision of what she wants. The goal of her work is to give people an interesting experience. It is not her goal to lead the audience on a journey so abstract that no one gets it. On stage, she often uses autobiographical material, chronicling it through her artistic endeavors. It is not uncommon for her to use props on stage. She also likes to break the rules and challenge assumption. "Take away labels; ballerina and dancer. Reconsider movement and pre-described methods. Then I realized I can do what ever the hell I want onstage. It took years to realize it. I love life and am fascinated by humanity, our dreams, our disorders, what drives us. I am fascinated by our behavior, I can understand it. I can understand the seeds. The reasons. It's not really acting,,,I relate. It's difficult. It's me amplified. I can explore and heal myself through acting. I can find myself in these characters. A sense of solace and connection." Suzana loves comedy, preferring it to be audacious and starring Jim Carrey or Amy Poehler. She loves romance and drama especially if Susan Sarandon or Sean Penn are in it. Her favorite dancer is Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov and she likes empowered female characters. In 2012 she aims to break into acting and earn a substantial and life transforming role. Suzana is setting her sights on directing and producing films and is making plans for The (non-profit) Stankovic Ballet Company that she founded in 2003. She will continue on her journey to self evolution and discovery and will blend art, expression and humanitarian work in the process. She is an organized leader with a vision. She is Suzana, a creative mind at work.
