Macy's: A Holiday Site Must See  E-mail

I bask in a city of light and bells. Salvation Army Bells ring to the rhythm of my walk as I hurry forward, then stop abruptly, and then hurry forward again. Trees dressed in lights move slightly to a less than brisk winter breeze. And their “dresses” are magnificent. Some all red, some multi-colored, some all white, some striped in red and flickering white, some pale indigo . . . People pull out their cameras in attempts to capture the surreal nature of NYC during the winter holiday.

I walk past statues on lawns of corporate buildings, statues of red ornaments piled on top of one another over flowing water, and then statutes of multi-colored lights in rollercoaster-like movement. The bells ring, and I walk on and on and on . . . The lights coat building fixtures; they coat trees; they coat lighting fixtures themselves, they coat awnings; they coat wreaths . . . My mind mills as my eyes remain enamored. What are the best sites to see in New York City during the holidays?  I wonder. A favorite of mine pops into mind: Macy’s. Why not go? I think to myself.

I approach Macy’s. White lights string into the image of a tree against the upper portion of the entrance of Macy’s. Inside the entrance, large red ornaments on thick red ribbons hang from the ceiling . . .

And then. The window displays.

Ships, and stars, and snowflakes. Fairies dressed in white with silver sequins gliding on strings. A wheel rotating with candy canes and nutcrackers. A wheel rotating with light wooden shoes and little glittering red ornaments. A large wheel turning with large golden hearts outlined in pearls. Another large wheel rotating with silver branches, silver snowflakes, silver icicles, and carved white birds. A gingerbread man spinning among candy canes on strings. Strings dipping black and silver ornaments like light snow bouncing up and then down in a subtle breeze. And there was more. Dizzyingly magical.

But what was this all about?

I read about the poetic journey of wishes becoming ornaments? There’s a seeking for wishes and then a creation of wishes in a tangible form, ornaments. A journey, a process so to speak of wishes. Hmmm. Intriguing. I read more. Apparently, well-known designers have collaborated to produce special ornaments to sell with 10% of these sales benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Mission of Make-A-Wish Foundation –“We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”

An interesting and worthy twist to a holiday must-see site.
