Meet the Filmmaker

Mac Store, Soho

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 6.00pm

Ed Burns created Newly Weds from a question, “What makes a successful marriage?” Based on two people now in their second marriage planning to take a more pragmatic approach. They think they have a great plan for their marriage however, this changes when then new relationship triangles develop with a knock on the door. “This is a love letter to Tribeca as I live in Tribeca and also because it is the 10th anniversary of Tribeca Film Festival” states Ed. “After writing a couple of scenes my DP then told me about the Cannon 5D camera, an absolute gate changer leveling the field s for any independent filmmaker, which costs $2,500, the lenses (three in all) cost around $300 each, has a small carbon imprint as we used for the majority no lights and looks like a still camera and for sound we used an M audio track, like a flash drive audio recorder (no boom was used), you could put into your pocket and we would go to places like Walkers Restaurant and do the scenes there, so undetectable and discrete as we didn’t need a boom.”

“We got the film in the can for $9,000 and it looks gorgeous!” states Ed.

With free form performances, the improvised scenes are approximately 10% of the film: shot in 4 and half months sometimes with a one-man crew. “It is more like doing theatre with no calling Cut!” comments Ed.

Ed “tweets” out and asks for ideas and opinions, the first thing I asked for was the title of the movie then the poster of the movie – fans voted – and a song contest to find an unsung act. He then comments that it is most important for him as a filmmaker to have full control of the entire process and this is now manageable given the technology (Purple Violets premiered exclusively on ITunes, November, 2007). “Theatrical release is so expensive and have very low box office returns.”
