We have finally entered the New Year, leaving all the trash from 2010 behind us, much of which we’d all love to forget. Unfortunately, some of it will remain engraved in our memories, especially when it comes to those fashion statements made by celebrities that have marked us, or rather, left us all scarred. Before we go, let’s pay tribute to some of those fashion rule-breakers that truly left their mark on 2010. Last New Year’s Eve in Times Square, Jennifer Lopez took the stage, starting the year off on a very sparkly note with her shiny bodysuit that lit up the room, competing with the ball scheduled to be dropped at the start of 2010. This outfit was completely bedazzled, living up to J.Lo’s diva status, hugging her famous curves in a way that a slinky dress probably couldn’t. Let’s just say, many jaws dropped that night. Another bodysuit that made its appearance in 2010 was Rihanna’s green one worn at the Echo Awards in Berlin. With its bold shoulder pads, plunging neckline, and wing-like sleeves, this was definitely a fashion risk we won’t be forgetting anytime soon, proving that Rihanna can get away with pretty much anything, at least in the world of fashion. This outfit, designed by Alexandre Vauthier, though giving her the appearance of some winged green creature, still managed to turn heads. Watch out Lady Gaga, this bombshell is not afraid to be bold. Kesha is yet another star always stepping out with bold fashion choices. Every time she comes onto a stage, she amazes the audience with the excessive glitter on her face and her wild child outfits. Once in a while, her fashion risks translate into fashion disasters like her garbage dress at the 2010 Video Music Awards. It doesn’t get any trashier than that. Or so we thought. Taylor Momsen, 16 year old Gossip Girl actress, rapidly went from classy to trashy to fit her rock star image. As lead singer of The Pretty Reckless, this rebellious young adolescent embodies the gothic, trashy, stripper look with her bustier, suspenders, and high heels. In other words, this is every parent’s nightmare. Unfortunately, Momsen is not the only teenager trying to look all grown up. Miley Cyrus has officially abandoned her wholesome Disney channel image and, well, pants. Sporting booty shorts, her statement is that she wants to be a sexy woman now and there’s nothing anyone can do about it, even the concerned parents of adolescent girls. Another role model for young girls that has appeared on many fashion magazine covers due to her strong fashion influence is Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester. On November 29th, 2010, this beautiful budding actress started quite the trend at the 2010 Gotham Independent Films Awards. She wore a Thom Browne suit. Of course, only a true fashion icon like Meester can pull off wearing menswear and inspire stars like Jessica Alba, Lara Bingle, and Winona Ryder to follow suit. Fellow fashion icon Katy Perry has also been sporting a rather original look. On several occasions, she has been seen wearing candy-colored latex dresses. Who knows? Perhaps she’ll be starting a new trend this year. I’m sure that would be every teenage guy’s dream. Some stars were a little less successful with their fashion choices this year, such as Britney Spears, who wore a Dolce and Gabanna bodysuit at the Grammy’s covered in a sheer black dress. It was a little bizarre but not very surprising coming from Britney. All she seemed to be stating with this outfit was that she forgot to buy a dress. Some stars forget to wear a dress; others probably would’ve been better off leaving theirs at home. Actress Charlize Theron walked the red carpet in a lavender gown that could’ve made the best dressed list if it hadn’t been for the strange cones on her breasts. It’s obvious where the statement was with this dress, but I suppose we could let her get away with it because of her history of stunning Oscar gowns. Finally, the one and only Lady Gaga, stunned audiences yet again with her infamous meat dress at the VMA’s which caused uproar amongst members of PETA. This dress was made entirely of raw meat and though this singer is known for her crazy costumes, this one takes the cake. We must give her credit for always managing to make a statement, and this one, though it was offensive, still deserves to be remembered. According to the star, she was just trying to show the hypocrisy of those who wear leather or fur. Sorry Gaga, it’s still disgusting. Hopefully 2011 will be filled with more fashion blunders to learn from and new trends to make it just as memorable as 2010.
